For Home Fashion Styling (FS 435), Fall 2026 semester. With family heritage as a focus, three motifs (inherited jewelry and collected seashells and feathers) were chosen to inspire two original textile prints. The first print, titled “Pearly Bird”, takes layered images of a collected abalone shell’s iridescent nacre with an opaque graphic hummingbird print by Stella McCartney for Chloé Spring/Summer 1999 to represent the natural beauty of the California coast, unity between flora and fauna, and the symbolism of hummingbirds as visiting ancestors in Mexican culture. The second original textile, titled “Family Charms”, is a layered trace contour of a pattern of a personal locket featuring images of ancestors and a cowboy charm, one trinket from each side of the family to symbolize familial union. The second print was used on a Chanel Spring/Summer 2004 “Valentine” flap bag, as the heart chain strap fit the colors and the motif of the heart-shaped locket. The Chanel bag was selected as the potential product of choice to display the “Family Charms” print due to its similarity to Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2006 “Valentine” print featured on handbags and ready-to-wear.
